The Importance of Air Purifiers
Air purifiers help promote cleaner and healthier indoor environments by removing harmful pollutants. Purifiers handle various contaminants like dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and gases that can affect respiratory health. While some contaminants are visible to the naked eye, many dangerous particles remain invisible yet present in our indoor spaces.
You might think that the air filter in your central system is enough. These filters have a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV), which indicates how small a particle it can trap. Most home systems can only handle up to MERV 13. These will trap dust and larger allergens but can let mold spores, smaller allergens, viruses, bacteria, and wildfire smoke through. While typical HVAC filters can improve your IAQ somewhat, they mainly protect the system itself.
We carry whole-home filtration systems that achieve HEPA-level air filtration, equivalent to a MERV rating of 17 or higher. Our friendly HVAC technicians would be happy to help you understand how these numbers apply to your home. HEPA filters can capture particles as small as 0.3 microns. While portable HEPA air filters can help with a small room, our air purification systems clean the air in your entire home.
Some of our systems use multiple ways to clean your air. Activated charcoal filters work by collecting gases, chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and odors through adsorption. Ionization gives airborne particles an electrical charge so they stick to collection plates or surfaces. UV light employs chambers that bombard mold spores, bacteria, and viruses with UV rays that destroy their DNA or RNA, neutralizing them and limiting their reproduction.
Benefits of investing in whole-home air filtration include:
- Reduced allergy symptoms
- Cleaner home
- Reduce wear on HVAC system
- Fewer illnesses
Air purifiers can benefit all households. However, you should particularly consider an air purification system if your household has lots of pets, lives near a high-pollution area, or includes someone with respiratory issues. Households with smokers or where you often cook at home should also consider air purification solutions. Similarly, you might want to consider purification if your home has a fireplace or a wood-burning stove.
